Santa Claus, Arizona – Historic Route 66 Landmark

A Brief History

Santa Claus was founded in 1917 as a Christmas-themed roadside attraction in Mohave County, approximately 14 miles northwest of Kingman along historic Route 66.

Developed by entrepreneur Nina Talbot, the 80-acre property was created to attract Route 66 travelers while promoting surrounding land sales. The town featured festive North Pole–style buildings, a year-round Santa Claus, and a functioning post office that became nationally recognized for its holiday “Santa Claus, Arizona” postmark.

During its peak in the late 1930s and early 1940s, Santa Claus gained regional and national attention. The attraction welcomed travelers from across the country — including Hollywood personalities traveling Route 66. Among many movie stars of the era, actress Jane Russell and Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra…. are often cited as one of the notable celebrity visitors, further enhancing the town’s publicity and reputation.

The Santa Claus Inn became a highlight of the destination, known for its themed dining and famous rum pie. By 1942, Santa Claus had established itself as a recognized tourist stop in Northern Arizona.

Today, the Santa Claus property is fundamentally embedded in Mohave County’s history and identity. For generations, it has been well known across Arizona, Nevada, and California state lines — a lasting symbol of Route 66 heritage and classic American roadside tourism.
